Job title: Probationer Authorised Firearms Officer (Police Constable)

Working location: Harwell

I work as an Authorised Firearms Officer at the Harwell site. It is within reasonable travelling distance of my family in the Midlands, and with the four day on, four day off shift pattern, I can visit my family on regular basis.

I guess you could say the role is glamorous. A typical day involves a briefing in the morning, or a briefing note so I can brief myself on the previous night’s events. I am then issued with my firearms and get out and about on the site. We act as visible patrols, checking buildings, performing gate checks, checking passes and ensuring only authorised personnel are allowed on the site.

There’s a great family atmosphere at Harwell, which is good because if an event happens, you need to know you can rely on your colleagues. We all get on really well, morale is high and stress is low, so you can switch off at the end of the day, which I found hard to do in my previous Home Office role.

At the CNC you can go as far as you want, and have the opportunity to sit promotional exams and work your way up the ladder. If you want to be a Police Officer and do something different and more specialist, I’d say join us.
