Health and disability

The CNC welcomes applications from disabled candidates and will make every effort to make reasonable adjustments where possible.

We have a duty of care to applicants to ensure they are fully medically, physically and psychologically fit to discharge the duties of the role for which they have applied, therefore depending on the role, applicants are expected to undergo the relevant elements of a rigorous medical process to determine suitability for employment. Whilst our health requirements vary according to job role, all applicants will be required to complete a medical questionnaire(s).

For the majority of police staff roles, a medical examination will not be required unless any condition requires consideration for reasonable adjustments. Police staff roles which will require a job related medical examination include: Police staff firearms instructor, armourer, kennel assistant, control room operator etc.

Applicants for the role of Police Officer will be required to submit a Declaration of Health Form at the early stages of recruitment as well as a full adult diagnostic assessment if there are any indications of Specific Learning Disabilities. Should the CNC Occupational Health team deem the Declaration of Health suitable for proceeding through the recruitment process, applicants will be invited to attend a full medical examination before joining the CNC. Any concerns highlighted may be referred to a Risk Assessment Panel for agreement to proceed. Applicants to the role of Police Officer will also be required to pass a multi-stage fitness test prior to being employed.

Some conditions which may be incompatible with the role of CNC Police Officer may include:

  • Insulin dependant diabetes
  • Some Specific Learning Difficulties
  • Epilepsy
  • Eyesight / hearing not meeting prescribed standards
  • Skin conditions
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Some mental health conditions

If you have any medical condition or specific learning difficulty that you would like to discuss with a member of the OH team prior to (or during) application, please call 01235 466 666 or email jobs@cnc.police.uk
